New Work: Nerd Nation Logo

July 11, 2010

I love designing identities, but being primarily a web designer I don’t get many chances. I enjoy the whole process, so I jump on the few chances that I have. Recently I was put in contact with a company called “Nerd Nation,” a company that resells and refurbishes electronics. I thought I might write a quick article about the process I went through in designing their shiny new logo.

Various concepts in sketches

Since I’m a nerd myself (for all intents and purposes), I had a lot of ideas going into the project. I started sketching things out in a page of my notebook, most of which only served as rough guides. Since Nerd Nation as a company focuses on refurbishing and reselling electronics I had even created a couple of vectorized robots for use with the logo.

When I showed the work-in-progress to my wife, she sketched out a few ideas of her own. The best idea was this one, which combined the logo and the robot concept nicely.

My wife's sketch that turned into the final logo

I worked her concept in Fireworks and added it to the collection. In the end, it was the logo that both the guys at Nerd Nation and I agreed was the best.

The final logo concept

One thing that I really like about this concept is that the “N-Bot” can stand alone or be joined with the rest of the letters to make a full “Nerd-bot.” It’s also fairly easy to scale, keeping its definition long past where my more 3D concepts would have lost clarity.

For me, this was a great project, I really feel like I got to stretch out and explore the concept. It’s not that I don’t get to do that anywhere else… But the fact that the client gave me the liberty to explore was really encouraging.
